In
simplest form, active
noise control (ANC)
means sound field modification
or soundfield cancellation,
by electroacoustical
means. To be a little
clearer, in ANC, a control
system drives a speaker
device to produce a
soundfield that is a
mirror-image of the
annoying sound, i.e.
the disturbance - the
speaker thus cancels
the disturbance, and
the net result is no
such noise at all.
The term differentiates
noise control method
from traditional or
passive methods for
controlling unwanted
sound and vibration.
Passive noise
control treatments –
you know! – include
insulation, silencers,
vibration mounts, damping
treatments, absorptive
treatments such as ceiling
tiles, and conventional
mufflers like the ones
used on today’s
automobiles. |

Passive
techniques work best
at middle and high frequencies,
and are important to
almost all environments
of the noisy world.
However, they can be
bulky and heavy when
used for low frequencies.
The size and mass of
these treatments depend
on the acoustic wavelength,
making them thicker
and more massive for
lower frequencies.
These low-frequency
environments need active
control system. What
are they, after all?
