Architects have been wistful of all things being metric in buildings so as to keep things simple, very simple. They conceptualize buildings on 1x1m gridlines and are successful in getting it built that way including external glazing and cladding, internal partitions etc. But when it comes to ceilings they come a cropper.

Ceilings earlier came in 2’x2’ size which when the world turned metric was 610x610mm. Manufacturers fine-tuned this to 600x600mm or in multiples like 1200x1200mm but this never matched the 1000x1000mm gridlines of everything else in the building.
