Vol 1 # 42
25 February 2011
Two Tuesdays, in exactly a span of a month, have shaken two parts of the Asia Pacific geographic plate. While the first in Northwest India was a mild tremor, the second one turned into a big tragedy, with a 6.5 quake reducing a part of the New Zealand capital to rubble. While sharing the anguish and concern of the quake victims, we are obviously reminded of what we said on the previous occasion…had Tufbloc been there…!
More than the fact that New Zealand sits on the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire – an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones stretching from Chile in South America through Alaska and down through the South Pacific with >14,000 earthquakes a year (though only about 150 are felt and <10 do any damage) – the structural reality that most construction in the capital of stone and brick made it more vulnerable.
While the city itself had a latest horror experience in September last with extensive devastation, India too had its national tragedies at Latur and Ahmedabad some years ago.

Interestingly, all these cases are built in stone and hard brick, cause of extensive fatalities in the event of calamity. This is exactly where newage, seismic-resistant building materials like Tufbloc matter most.
Tufbloc’s strong yet lightweight core – the high density fibremesh reinforced or HDFR – alongwith seismic-restraint accessories render ceilings and walls resistant to siesmic tremors.

It goes without saying that Nature’s fury is beyond human capacity. However, humans can survive with materials like Tufbloc.
